Breathe in Wellness with Halotherapy

Rooted in the Greek word “halos,” meaning “salt,” halotherapy is a modern take on an age-old practice. Perspire uses Clearlight’s HALO ONE™ technology, a holistic approach that mimics the microclimate of a natural salt cave. Placed within your infrared sauna, HALO ONETM disperses microscopic salt particles into the air for you to breathe in, creating a restorative experience.

Here, we explain what halotherapy is, how it enhances your infrared sauna sessions at Perspire, and what you can expect when halotherapy becomes part of your wellness ritual.

What is Halotherapy (salt therapy)?

Halotherapy, also called salt therapy, is a natural and non-invasive modality that recreates the microclimate of a salt cave, allowing you to breathe in fine salt particles that may help ease breathing and promote a sense of calm.

Halotherapy is inspired by the post-World War II discovery that spending time in salt mines may have improved respiratory health. Since then, halotherapy has been studied for its potential benefits in people with conditions like asthma [1], chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchitis, and even the common cold. Some research also suggests that halotherapy may improve general well-being and quality of life in people with respiratory conditions.

Leading health organizations, including the American Lung Association [2] and the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America [3], note that while more research is needed, halotherapy may offer supportive benefits for some individuals. At Perspire, we consider halotherapy a complementary wellness therapy that can enhance well-being when used alongside traditional medical care and other lifestyle practices.

How Halotherapy Works at Perspire

Perspire offers Clearlight’s HALO ONE™ technology, a simple yet powerful way to elevate your sauna experience. The HALO ONE™ is a compact, quiet halogenerator that actively breaks pharmaceutical grade salt into microscopic particles and disperses them into the air. HALO ONE™ is positioned within the sauna for ease of use and optimal salt dispersion.

We recommend activating the halogenerator within the first 10 minutes of your sauna session to maximize benefits. As you relax in the gentle heat, you'll also breathe in the tiny salt particles, allowing them to gently reach your airways and land on your skin. This process may help support easier breathing, ease allergy or sinus discomfort, and promote a full-body recharge.

You can easily book a halotherapy session as an add-on in the Perspire mobile app. Our studio team will have your salt-infused sauna experience teed up and ready the moment you arrive.

The Science Behind Halotherapy

The research on halotherapy is still emerging, but existing studies point to its potential benefits for respiratory health and overall well-being. Most of the available studies focus on adults with conditions like asthma, bronchitis, and COPD.

A recent literature review on 13 studies found that halotherapy may help improve breathing, clear mucus, and enhance quality of life in people with chronic respiratory diseases [4]. While promising, researchers point to the need for more studies in broader, healthier populations. The Cleveland Clinic supports the call for more studies on halotherapy and also points out that adverse events are few and far between—an encouraging finding that’s consistent across studies [5].

The role of halotherapy in supporting skin health is less clear, though some small studies and anecdotal reports suggest it may help to improve skin hydration, tone, and texture [6].

The potential benefits of halotherapy include:

  • Breathe Easier: Helps clear mucus and open the airways to support your respiratory system
  • Complementary Support: Can be used alongside traditional medical approaches for respiratory conditions, when advised by a provider
  • Promote Relaxation: Enhances the calming environment of an infrared sauna for a whole-body boost
  • Skin Health: May improve skin tone and texture, based on limited evidence

What to Expect in a Halotherapy Session

When trying a new-to-you modality like halotherapy, it’s helpful to know what to expect. As you breathe in the fine salt particles dispersed throughout the sauna, you may notice:

  • A slight salty taste on your lips
  • A mild salt sense
  • A scratchy throat as your airways begin to clear
  • Salt particles gently settling on your skin

Some guests also notice sinus drainage or a bit of coughing, which simply reflects your body’s natural effort to move loosened mucus through the respiratory system. If you notice any unwanted to uncomfortable sensations, you can pause your session and let the studio team know.

Is Halotherapy safe? What You Should Know

Yes, halotherapy is generally considered safe for most adults and can be a relaxing, supportive part of your wellness routine. The American Lung Association [2] recommends talking with your healthcare provider to make sure it’s right for you, especially if you have underlying health concerns like asthma or other respiratory conditions.

Because halotherapy is experienced within your infrared sauna session, the same basic precautions apply. Pregnant women and adults with uncontrolled cardiovascular or circulatory conditions should typically avoid using infrared saunas and other modalities.

Below are a few additional considerations to keep in mind, too:

  • If you’re feeling under the weather or have a fever, it’s best to wait until you’re recovered before visiting your studio again
  • If you have any open wounds, rashes, or other skin sensitivities, proceed with caution and talk with your healthcare provider ahead of using halotherapy
  • If you’ve recently undergone any surgeries or procedures, especially on your ears, nose, or throat, salt exposure may cause discomfort or dryness during healing

As with any new wellness practice, it’s smart to talk with your healthcare provider first—especially if one of the above safety concerns applies to you.
